As part of the Filep-project "Information Processing for Domain Scientists" we explore hypertext-based methods in an effort to substantially support the teaching of ICT skills to natural science students. It is our goal to provide teachers with solutions they can use to design more attractive computer science lessons that are of higher quality.
We have developed so-called "application guides" for tutorials which support the acquisition of skills required to operate software applications. This computer controlled screen allows to present instructions selectively, so that the tutoring comes close to a individual instruction.
With the application guides, the students should learn as many basic skills as possible on their own. As a result our teaching assistants have considerably more time available for individual counseling. In particular, personal support can be offered with advanced topics that require more conceptual understanding.
The evaluation of two application guides while in use with classes of 300 (WS2001/02) and 150 (SS2002) students respectively has returned positive results.
