The support of education and research within ETH World will require the reengineering of many administrative processes. The goal will be, whenever possible, to support these processes through web transactions. This will enable the direct integration, without media interruptions, into the central administration and the use of the respective databases.
The project "IT-Building Blocks" will establish the software architecture needed for this development within the Computing Services. This architecture will provide secure, reliable and stable support for large volumes of web transactions with the central databases.
The software architecture will be three-tier: the Client will be a pure HTML browser; the Middleware a Bea application server with Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), Java Beans and Enterprise Java Beans; and the Database Server will be based on Oracle V8.
This architecture will be implemented in the pilot project "Electronic Inscription" in the Rectorate to enable the verification in a real application environment.
